Immediate Water Damage Response and Cleanup

Water damage can cause significant structural damage to a building. Immediate response and cleanup can help to mitigate the damage and prevent further issues, such as mold growth.

What to Do After Water Damage

If your home or business has been damaged by water, there are steps you can take to protect your property and minimize the damage. The most important thing is to act quickly and to take the following steps:

  1. Stop the water source. If the water is still coming in, such as from a burst pipe or a leaking roof, turn off the water supply at the main valve. If you can’t turn off the water, call a plumber or a water damage restoration company.
  2. Remove the water. Once the water has been stopped, remove as much of the water as possible. This can be done with a wet/dry vacuum, a mop, or a towel.
  3. Dry the area. Once the water has been removed, dry the area with a fan or dehumidifier. This will help to prevent mold growth.
  4. Inspect the area for damage. Once the area is dry, inspect it for damage. Look for any signs of structural damage, such as cracks in the walls or ceiling, or warping of the floors. If you find any damage, call a contractor to repair it.

What to Spray After Water Damage

Once the area has been cleaned and dried, it is important to spray a disinfectant to prevent mold growth. There are several types of disinfectants that can be used for this purpose, such as:

  • Bleach
  • Lysol
  • Clorox

Follow the directions on the bottle for how to mix and apply the disinfectant. Be sure to wear gloves and a mask when spraying the disinfectant.
